Earth Day, a Universal Contest is the first bilingual book in the Earth Day series, written for English and Spanish speaking children around the world to enjoy…more languages will be coming soon!
Maria Martinez-Blanco reads our English and Spanish books in the videos below. Maria has worked as an elementary Spanish bilingual New Jersey public school teacher for over 20 years. When not teaching, she is an avid children’s book reader, visual artist and jewelry maker.

EARTH DAY A UNIVERSAL CONTEST (ENGLISH) TEXT:
Once upon an Earth Day in a cosmos way up high
All the stars together like diamonds in the sky.
They gathered to decide ‘ THEIR MOST FAVORITE PLANET of ALL’
Between the hot, the cold, the colorful, the big and small!
Every star had their favorite and different was each one,
But ‘EARTH‘ was the favorite of the Star they called ‘SUN’
(Sun’s opinion is not shared by all the stars and so they begin to ‘suggest’ other planets for Sun’s consideration…)
“But number ONE, the closest, is sweet, little ‘MERCURY’!
I like it because it’s hot and I think you should agree!“
“But wait a minute Sun, even though that may be true,
VENUS, planet TWO, has a crush on you!”
“The EARTH is planet THREE…
But I like FOUR, instead.
My favorite planet is MARS.
It’s the only one that’s red!“
“JUPITERS the biggest, with more moons and that’s a fact!
Number FIVE must be the winner! No one can argue that!“
“I can!“ said another, feeling rather bold!
“SATURN, planet SIX, has shiny rings of gold!“
“But if you’re feeling lucky pick planet number SEVEN!
URANUS, is true blue and a big old piece of Heaven!“
“Now wait a minute Sun, I hope I’m not too late,
to cast my vote for, NEPTUNE, the last one, planet EIGHT!“
“Planets, planets, planets! You make me want to shout!
I prefer PLUTOIDS they’re cool and far out!
If PLUTO were still a planet, there’d be no contest at all!
He’d steal away your hearts, this crazy little ball!“
So Sun considered carefully each point the stars had made.
But Sun was not so fickle and his feelings did not fade!
Still puzzled by Sun’s choice, the stars ask him just for fun, “What makes the EARTH so special?“
“PEOPLE!“, Said Sun.
“People? What’s a people? Whatever do you mean?
How can we understand a thing we have not seen?”
“Just because they’re small and somewhat hard to see
that never is a reason to not look carefully!“
This time the stars looked harder and peaked around a cloud…
“Oh My Gosh, we see them!“ Exclaimed the stars out loud!
“Do people see us too?
They seem so far away.“
“They see planets, moons and stars at NIGHT and me,
I light there DAY!
And like planets, people differ, but this I truly know…
Without people, none of us would glow!
They have a special power when they WISH on you and I…
The next thing you know, we’re lighting up the sky!“
At last the stars could see Sun was absolutely right and Earth won the contest on that very night!
“CONGRATULATIONS, planet Earth and little people too! Remember, twinkling overhead, are stars that all LOVE YOU!”

Habia un DIA DE LA TIERRA en los cosmos muy arriba
Todas las ESTRELLAS se reunía como diamantes en el cielo.
Se reunieron para decidir ‘SU PLANETA FAVORITA ENCIMA DE TODO’
Entre el calor, el frío, el colorido … el grande y el pequeño!
Cada Estrella tenia su favorito y diferente era cada uno
pero ‘LA TIERRA’ era el favorito de la estrella que llamaron ‘SOL’
(La opinion del Sol no es compartido por todas las estrellas, por lo que la estrellas comiensan a “sugerir” otros planetas para consideración del Sol…)
“Pero el número UNO, y el más cercano, es el dulce, pequeño ‘MERCURIO’!
Me gusta porque hace calor y creo que debería estar de acuerdo!”
“Pero espere un minuto Sol, a pesar de que eso puede ser cierto,
VENUS, planeta DOS, está enamorado de ti!”
“La TIERRA es el planeta TRES …
Pero me gusta CUATRO, en cambio,
Mi planeta favorito es MARTE. Es el único que es rojo!”
“JUPITER es el más grande, con más lunas y eso es un hecho!
Número CINCO debe ser el ganador! Nadie puede argumentar eso!”
“Yo puedo!” dijo otro, sintiéndose bastante audaz!
“SATURNO, planeta SEIS, tiene anillos brillantes de oro!”
“Pero si te sientes con suerte seleccióna planeta número SIETE!
URANO, es cierto azul y un viejo pedazo grande del cielo!”
Un momento Sol, espero que no sea demasiado tarde,
para emitir mi voto para, NEPTUNO, el ultimo, planeta OCHO!”
“Los planetas, los planetas, los planetas! Me da ganas de gritar!
Prefiero PLUTOIDES son cool y lejos!
Si Plutón era un planeta aún, no habría competencia en absoluto!
Él robaría lejos sus corazones, esta loca pequeña bola!
Así que Sol considera cuidadosamente cada punto que las estrellas han hecho
Pero Sol no era tan voluble y sus sentimientos no se desvaneció!
Aún desconcertado por la elección del Sol, las estrellas le preguntaron sólo por diversión,
“¿Qué hace que la TIERRA sea tan especial?”
“GENTE”, dijo Sol!
“¿Gente? ¿Qué es una gente? ¿Qué quieres decir?
¿Cómo podemos entender una cosa que no hemos visto?”
“Sólo porque son pequeños y algo difícil de ver
nunca es una razón para no mirar con cuidado!”
Esta vez, las estrellas miraron alrededor de una nube …
“Los vemos!” Exclamó las estrellas en alta voz!
“¿La gente nos ve también? Parece que estan tan muy lejos.”
“Ellos ven los planetas, las lunas y las estrellas durante la noche, y yo,
Yo ilumino su DIA!
Y al igual que los planetas, las personas son diferentes, pero esto yo realmente lo se …
Sin la gente, ninguno de nosotros brillaremos!
Tienen un poder especial cuando DESEAN por ustedes y yo …
De repente, ya sabes, todos estamos iluminando el cielo!”
Al fin las estrellas pudieron ver que el Sol tenia toda la razon… y
La Tierra gano el concurso en esa misma noche!
“DULCE SUEÑOS, planeta Tierra y la gente pequeña tambien!
Recuerden, brillando arriba estan las estrellas que por seguro todas TE QUIEREN!”
